Wrinkled Up Paper Tutorial

BEFORE YOU START DOWNLOAD THE PATTERN FILE HERE
place it into your adobe directory E.G (C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Presets\Patterns).

Create a new document 500×500 pixels, select the color “d2d2d2″ then select the “rectangle tool” or press the letter “U” then draw out a rectangle. Make it look like a small A4 peice of paper. Now right click the layer that has been created and goto “blending options” and goto pattern overlay. then take the following steps.

1. click pattern overlay,
2. click the arrow next to the pattern selction
3. click the little arrow for extra options
4. click color paper

here is the image that the numbers corrospond to. (hope ive made easy enough to understand).

Now when the new set of patterns are loaded into photoshop scroll down and select the notebook pattern (see image below).

If you followed the above correctly you should have something like below.

Now lets add our wrinkles, create a new document 500×500 pixels select the color black and a light grey, then select the gradient tool. Change the mode to “difference”

Now just drag random gradients on your canvas all on the same layer till you get an effect like this.

Once you have a effect like above (baring in mind it wont be the exact same as mine) goto “filter > stylize > emboss” use standard settings. You should have something like this.

Now “right-click” your background layer and select “layer from background” and click ok to the box that comes up, now click the layer while holding the “ctrl” key on the keyboard, this will select it now copy “edit > copy” or “ctrl + c”.

Now divert back to you piece of paper your prevously made and click on the “SECOND” box on your layer whilst holding down “ctrl”.

This will select your paper, Now goto “edit > paste into” or press “shift + ctrl + v”. The new layer that has been created set the layer mode to “hard light”. Now give it a drop shadow and a black 1 pixel stroke and your done, it should look like this.

Heres just a little pile of paper i made using this tutorial.

    I disagree with Nathan, respectfully. The papers are not super realistic, but the effect – the whole point of the tutorial – is EXTREMELY realistic! Great use of a simple idea. A+

    I really don’t get it…i give up! Will try another time…LOL I have Photoshop 7.0 and that part you mention >>>>layer from background” and click ok to the box that comes up <<<<<< I don’t have that… :( This is not easy to do! Do you have a similar tutorial using this version of photoshop? Please get back to me using my hotmail address…Thanks so much.

    hey maria

    i got confused too the first time,

    first in the new document you created with the gradient tool, all that is asking you to do, is unlock the layer, usually when u create a new document with a solid color as background, photoshop will lock the first layer with a lock, so the instructor was just telling u to unlock it that way u can copy it, u unlock it by just double click the layer and press okay on the box that apperas.

    once unlock , then u ctrl + click the layer to get the “marching ants” around the “that” layer and copy (ctrl +c or edit->copy).

    THENNN, u go “BACK” to your FIRST DOCUMENT you created (the one with the shape tool and grey color square in the begginig) and by having that layer selected, u ctrl + shift and v to paste it, or edit->paste into. once u do that, all u have to is change the layer mode from normal to hard light, that’s it.

    i find these step very confusing, u didn’t have to that, u could just create a new layer in the same document and do the gradient and emboss thing there on top of the layer and then apply the hard light, it still get the same effect, it just that it leaves some undesireable strokes around the edges but u can just erase it with the eraser and then …merge all layers and apply the shadow and stroke.

    I’m having trouble at the part below.

    I’m trying to copy the layer but the option is grayed out and won’t let me copy it and so I can’t paste the the layer into the paper. Any help?
